  • Shadow Education SIG seminar, 28 May 2021

    On May 28, during the Shadow Education SIG seminar, Weilin Wang (HKU PhD student) and Robert Liu (HKU MEd student) spoke about shadow education research in Mainland China. Weilin shared his thoughts on how start tutors in China use examination-oriented pedagogy to help students with Gaokao preparation, while Robert shared emerging findings from his pilot study on A-level students’ use of private tutoring in an international school.

    The Shadow Education SIG events on 2nd and 9th of February

    The Shadow Education SIG held two events on 2nd and 9th of February. MED students from HKU: Jiali Chen, Robert Liu, Mako Kato and Ming Yue NG made the presentations of their research projects on mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and Japan. Thank you to many guests who joined from all over the world.

    Shadow Education SIG on Zoom, 18 November 2020

    The Shadow Education SIG members met virtually on November 18, 2020 to listen to a presentation by Mr Li Jun, a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education, HKU.

    Li Jun’s presentation was entitled: “Lessons from the Fieldwork: Researching Private Tutoring Entrepreneurs in the Context of Chongqing, China”

    The SIG was well attended by current and new members.

    The Shadow Education SIG’s meeting on 2 October, 2019

    “The Shadow Education SIG members met on October 2, 2019 to listen to a presentation by a PhD student Pubali Ghosh on “Secondary students’ decision-making on private tutoring in West Bengal, India. The SIG was moderated by Dr Nutsa Kobakhidze and well attended by the current PhD and MEd students. Dr Kevin Yung from the Education University of Hong Kong joined the meeting”.

    The Shadow Education SIG’s meeting was held on 27 September, Friday. The presenter was Mr Li Jun (PhD student at SCAPE) with the presentation title “Teachers’ Transformation into Businesspersons in the Shadow Education System in China: A Theoretical Framework.”

    SIG Meeting on 17 September 2019

    The Shadow Education SIG met on 17 September and hosted a talk by Wang Hao from Education University of Hong Kong. Based on his MEd dissertation, Wang Hao shared findings from the study Private Supplementary Tutors’ Identity Construction in Mainland China.

    The talk was joined by Emeritus Professor Mark Bray, Dr Ora Kwo and Dr Kevin Yung. Dr Nutsa Kobakhidze moderated the talk.

    Knowledge Exchange with the Shadow Education Sector in Korea and China

    Mark Bray, Ora Kwo, Abbas Arani, Li Wenjian and Zhang Wei were invited to the First International Conference on Hakwon Education held on 11 April, 2015. Click here to watch the news report on the event in MBN.

    Mark Bray and Ora Kwo gave a keynote speech on regulating private tutoring for public good in the opening of the conference. It was also an occasion to launch the Korean version of their book: CERC Monograph Series 10, “Regulating Private Tutoring for Public Good: Policy Options for Supplementary Education in Asia“.

    Immediately after this conference, Mark Bray and Ora Kwo launched the Chinese translation of the book, entitled 以公众利益规范私人补习:亚洲补习教育之政策选择  on 15 April 2015 at the CETU 10th anniversary conference in Zhengzhou, China. The CETU is a co-publisher of this version, together with the UNESCO office in Beijing.

    The launch was held as a keynote address in the opening ceremony of the conference, attended by over 2,000 people. The book is nowavailable for free download here, from CETU and from UNESCO-Beijing.
